Why fewer women enroll in college/university in Korea than men?/Jinsu Bae

I think that the reason for this issue is closely related to the fact that Korea is a center of science and engineering university. Science and technology attract more people than the humanities. Because the science and technology field is highly specialized and practical, it is necessary for modern society (mostly workplace), so it is advantageous for finding a job. However, there are various problems in the system related to college career (employment) in Korea.

Cognitive aspect

Korean society still has a strong male-centered ideology. In addition, engineering colleges are most likely to work in the field. However, there is a strong prejudice that women will be relatively weaker than men. Therefore, from the beginning, men tend to be preferred from the interview selection.

<The reason of women disadvantage in recruitment process>
-Difference of work ability(0.83%)
-Reasons of resignation, pregnancy, childbirth, child care, etc(50.83%)
-Relationship with customers or colleagues(9.61%)
-Preconceptions of employer(37.71%)
-Etc(1.02%)

Institutional aspect

In the case of engineering colleges, most of them try to find a job in a private company. In Korea, however, the law is not effective enough to support women's marriage, housework, pregnancy, childbirth, childcare, and maintaining their positions in the company. Also, women graduate from science and engineering college (bore male preference) and get a job in a private company, but usually get fired when they get married and have children. When this happens, what they have studied so far is wasted.

In Korea, the science and engineering college, which is favorable to employment, is more popular than college of liberal arts. So, most of them hope to go to science and engineering college. Therefore, gap between the two universities is gradually increasing. As a result, of course, the enrollment rate of science and engineering university women has increased, but only about one to four. On the contrary, male admission rate is still overwhelming.

For this social phenomenon and numerical reasons, women have a lower rate of enrollment in college / university than men.
