Introduction to Sociology/Aging/Bokyung Kim

1.     Summary

This writing talks about aging. Aging is a biological and sociological process in which humans experience and achieve biological and social maturity. Aging has a close relationship with biology and sociology. Human life can be divided into various ages. It includes Infancy, Toddler, Childhood, Adolescence, Young adult, Prime adulthood, Middle age, Old age. We distinguish them by a certain degree of similarity. The way of interpreting aging is socially constructed. It is very diverse.
There is discrimination and prejudice by age or age group. We call age biases Ageism. Usually young people and old people become the target. Discrimination against young people includes no voting rights in the elections, no legal enjoyment of alcohol and cigarettes, no possession of public office, and so on. The reason discriminations exist is because people do not think young people can make mature decisions. And because society has stereotypes that youth are dangerous and confusing. Discrimination against the elderly is very serious. It includes behavioral limitations to physical abuse. The reason for differentiating the elderly is because of the stereotypes that the elderly are conservative. Earnings vary according to age. In order to solve this problem, social security system etc. are carried out. However, women's poverty can not be solved easily. Older people make sex life more active. Aging blacks are subject to greater discrimination and abuse than white people. In the United States, the elderly are not equally distributed in all regions. Globally, the average life expectancy of humans is increasing. Older people can live healthy if they have a positive attitude.

2.    Interesting point
I was most interested in discrimination against old people and young people. I think discrimination and abuse against the elderly is really serious. It must disappear. I was also surprised that there was a lot of discrimination against young people. In fact, before reading this article, I did not think it was discrimination. I thought of them unconsciously as very natural. However, it was a behavior that oppressed and discriminated against the freedom of young people. I am also sad that despite the efforts to solve the aging problem, discrimination based on gender and race does not disappear easily. It is a serious problem that society needs to solve.

3.    Discussion point
According to this writing, there are many behavioral restrictions on young people in our society. (inability to vote in elections, inability to legally imbibe alcohol or smoke cigarettes, inability to determine whether or not marry, etc.) It is discrimination against young people. However, accepting them may confuse society because of the immature decisions of young people. Do you think we should maintain these behavioral restrictions? Do you think we should get rid of them? I wonder what you think.

Comments

  1. I think the age constraint on voting rights needs to be slightly revised. In particular, I believe that elections involving teenagers education like the superintendent of schools are needed more and more.

  2. I think I should limit young people to some extent. Because young people are mentally and physically less grown people and it is necessary to prevent them from growing dangerous. But I do not think you should stop the election. Even if you are influenced by your parents, you have to develop your habit of electing from a young age, so that you are more likely to participate later in your life.
