Introduction to Sociology/Family/Jeong Hyeonsu

1. Summary

As society changes, variety of family forms are being formed beyond the traditional family structure consisting of one mother and one father and children. In almost every society, the basic form of a family is consisting of heterosexual couples and their biological children. It changes in the form of a wider variety of families by cultural variations and changes over time. The family life cycles go through courtship, marriage, children, divorce, and death. Like other all social community, inequality is existing in relation to family. (gender, race and religion are where inequality exists.) There is a new family form-for example, one-parent households and cohabitation, same-sex unions, childfree-that deviates from the family types that are considered normal.

2. Interesting things

Treating courtship as part of family life was interesting to me. Because, I thought family shared the same residential space or were legally connected. Courting also includes phone calls, characters that happen without real-life contact like watching movies.

3. Discussion Point

urging enactment of living partner law in the blue house website.

Over the past years, the living partner law(생활동반자법) has been mentioned in many times in Korean society. Moreover, last November, about 60,000 public petitions urging the enactment of the law were made on the blue house homepage. The living partner law allows not only a heterosexual couple but also a friend and a gay couple can to be recognized as a family member. I believe that today's society where there are many more people who don't want to marry heterosexual marriages, and more people don't live with their immediate family members, the legislation is necessary for everyone. However, some groups, such as Christian, oppose the legislation because of the collapse of the existing family system. So, I would like to hear what you think about this law.
