Deviance

1. Summary

- What is deviance?

Deviance is any behavior that violates cultural norms. Norms are social expectations that guide human behavior. Norms are hinged on society. So the more society is confusing, the more frequent deviance is. Deviance includes robbery, theft, rape, murder, and assault, etc.

- Types of deviance

1. Durkheim's anomie theory
2. Merton's anomie theory
3. Differential association theory
4. Labeling theory

These are typical examples of deviance.

2. Application to Korean society

Every morning, we encounter many deviations through newspapers and news broadcasting. Among these deviations, there are terrible and extraordinary things that are unimaginable.

Recently, teenagers' AIDS infection rates are increasing rapidly. Over the past decade, the number of patients with AIDS has increased by 4.2 times. According to figures from the National Assembly Health and Welfare Committee, the National Health Insurance Commission(GNP) received 2,354 cases of AIDS last year, up 2.6 times from 536 in 2007.

The number of new AIDS patients totaled 743 in 2007 and 773 in 2010. It increased to 1013 in 2013 and 1062 in 2016. From 2012 to last year, a total of 42,429 patients diagnosed with AIDS were admitted to AIDS clinics and 412.2 billion won in health insurance.

In addition, sexual assault rates are increasing. This phenomenon is clearly not normal. Then why these are happen? Higher levels of AIDS infection and sexual assault mean that the social norms become ambiguous. It is also vulnerable to sanctions. Therefore, our society must make strong legal preparations to prevent the spread of crime. Anyone should be punished for their sins regardless of their age.

However, after receiving the punishment, they must not be labelled in society to keep the individual from falling into the same path. Otherwise, the deviant behavior and category of society will continue to increase.
