Introduction to Sociology/Aging/doeun lee

1.     Summary

This article is about aging. Aging is the process of matureing and experiencing various developments in biological and sociological terms. However, being born in the same year does not lead to the same sociological development. This is because various social patterns such as the environment of growing up and the level of education are different from each other. Therefore, aging is a complex process that can not be defined only biologically. Aging is divided into various biological ages, and there is a sociological contradiction between them. Because of the influence of society rather than biological instincts, young people want to look older, and adults want to be younger. Often, ageism also occurs between young and elderly.

2.     New/Interest I learned

It is very interesting that the judgment of 'young' about 'old' is judged differently according to the life expectancy given differently in each country. I did not think of any other case because I had only thought about it in Korea. In some countries, '50s' may be 'middle-aged' and in other countries 'elderly'.

The poverty problem of the elderly is also serious in Korea. The poverty problem of the middle-aged to elderly people who suffered many troubles such as the civil war and the IMF is particularly serious. However, I think the problem has never been corrected, although it has continued to pose a steady problem. In the United States, however, the introduction of the social security system and much effort have been able to reduce the poverty rate of the elderly. The graphs show a lot of changes. This graph shows that the problem of the elderly poverty has a clear solution. Korea should try to make a positive change like the United States.

3.     Discussion

There are several limitations on young people who are deemed less mature. No suffrage, no marriage, no abortion, etc. It will be discrimination for some mature adolescents, and it will become a hedge against less mature teenagers. For the latter youth, we are constraining the law. Do you think this is right? And have you ever felt uncomfortable because you were unable to do something because of your age when you were a teenager?
