Introduction to Sociology/Aging / minji Moon

1. summary

Aging generally refers to the process of getting older. More specifically, aging means that the function of various tissues and organs of the physical and physiological aspects is weakened as the age of the human (or organism) increases.

From an objective point of view, age means biological age such as birth year.
On the other hand, from a subjective point of view, age means the social role and behavior expected of a person of that age. The age of a person can be classified as "Infancy, Toddler, Childhood, Adolescence, Young adult, Primeadulthood, Middle age, Old age".

As mentioned above, age is objective and subjective. People classify "young" and "old" subjectively.
Ironically, young people want to look more mature, and adults want to look younger.
So, the distinction of age has a very subjective aspect.
Nevertheless, children and the elderly are discriminated against because of their age.
Children receive regulation of their behavior (voting rights, marriage, tobacco, alcohol, etc.).
It's because they can not make decisions.
Old people are neglected in society. Or the elderly are prejudiced that "the elderly are conservative".

To prevent the poverty of the elderly, the government introduced the social security system.
However, as a result of this, the welfare for adolescents became insufficient and the poverty rate under 18 years of age increased.

There are several reasons to explain why women have a longer life span than men.
But these are not clearly explained.

Meanwhile, life expectancy is increasing globally.

2. interesting things

The part about prejudice about the elderly was interesting.
The preconceptions mentioned in this article were what I actually had.
But when I read this again, it was literally a prejudice, not a fact.
The elderly can also be progressive. Also, the driving of the elderly was actually safe.
I realized that age is subjective and can not be an indicator of objective judgment.
As sociology, I felt that I should not make errors in generalization.

3.disussion point

 1. As mentioned in this article,
Will men do more dangerous behavior than women? If so, why?

2. What are your preconceptions about age?
   Why did you have preconceptions?

Comments

  1. There is a prejudice that older adults tend to have conservative thoughts. While walking on the street, it is a personal taste for wearing a short skirt or wearing pine clothes, but many older people point out that.
