Introduction to Sociology / Q&A (12/04) / Bokyung Kim

Q. Why are families changing?

A. The reason why the family keeps changing is because people's values have changed. In the past, there was a value to live in a large family unit. Because people in the past had the idea that men and women should get married and have children. They also had the idea that they should support their older parents. In recent years, however, many people have the value of living in a nuclear family or living alone. In the past, the family was recognized by blood. In recent years, however, family forms have become more diverse, recognizing families not dependent on blood, such as adoption.

Q. How much impact on the society we can expect those trends to have?

A. I think we have had a lot of influence in creating such a society. We receive a lot of economic support from our parents when we are young. However, being an adult does not support parents well. It is a serious problem of an aging society.
