Introduction to Sociology / Aging / Minjeong Lee

1. Summary

This text describes Aging. Aging is a biological and sociological process. Through this process, humans are matured biologically and socially. Biological age and sociological age may be different. The sociological age here refers to how age varies. The distinction between old and young can vary depending on the expected life expectancy. For example, in the sphere of society where life span is short and means of early death are common, the middle age can be regarded as the elderly. The age groups that are distinguished from the others are also discriminated against. People know about old age discrimination, but they do not realize that young people are discriminated against. Discrimination against young people is a limitation of behavior, but discrimination against older people is physical abuse. Old people who are discriminated against are at least twice as likely to die as those who are not.

2. New/Interesting/Unusual things I learned

I thought sociological age meant human maturity. However, through this text, I have found that sociological age is relative, determined by the life expectancy of the society.

3. Discussion

In this text, discrimination against young people is a limitation of behavior, but discrimination against older people is an area of physical abuse. If so, is there no physical abuse for young people and no limitation of behavior for the elderly? I think that there are various types of discrimination in society and it is not possible to generalize what kind of discrimination an individual is subjected to.
