Introduction to Sociology / Stratification / Taerim Kim

1. Summary

This article was about stratification. Stratification influence to our real life. In this article, it concentrates upon economic stratification. Inequality based on stratification is spread worldwide, include U.S. For example, it stresses that total wealth of half of American is same as the total wealth of  400 Americans who are rich in U.S and 25 Americans have the same wealth which 2 billion world's poor have. In U.S, after 2007 economic recession, the gap between rich and poor has bigger and bigger. Now, the rich people in U.S.(1%) controls 40% of the wealth and the gap based on race has been much bigger. Sociologists are interested in explaining this worldwide inequality. Marx Weber saw power, property, prestige as important dimensions of stratification. These three are important components which can refer class of individuals. This article points out that the origin of this inequality as transform from hunter/gather societies to horticultural/pastoralist societies. Surplus goods that occurred in horticultural/pastoralist society is the important element which is the origin of inequality. Sociologist Joel Charon answered to the question "Why inequality in our society is continue?". He suggested following four reasons.
1. those who had power and wealth protects the inequality system
2. Culture make people accept the inequality
3. People are taught to accept their position in life
4. Police, courts, and prisons cooperate to protect inequality system
This article also said about a consequence of continued inequality. Inequality occurred from inequality influence to the chance of life. For example, poverty has lower health than rich people, and they also get lower education system compared to rich. Inequalities are seen worldwide. We can see that in a situation like this: Half of the world are living with less than 2.5 dollars.
Some theorists insist that development and modernization maintain this poverty. And additionally, some theorists use dependency theory and world system theory to explain that.

2, 3. New/interesting points and discussion

https://ideas.ted.com/the-4-biggest-reasons-why-inequality-is-bad-for-society/
The point which capitalism strengthen the inequality of our society was interesting. It said that people who work hard trying to go the top of the hierarchy, but they can't go up there. In this article, instead, they(people who work hard to go up there) only fall down to the lower hierarchy.  Also, the explanation about how capitalism uses gender inequality to their benefit was interesting, too.
But the most interesting part was about Structural-functionalism on stratification. In Structural-functionalism, they think salary difference which determined by functional importance is natural. It explains this with the example of the garbage collector and the doctor. But isn't it the same consequence when we think that there is high and low of occupations?
And they thought inequality is taken some role in our society, so do they think that we don't have to fight against inequality?
