Introduction to sociology/Stratification/Dayoung Lee

1.Summary

The topic I learnt from this writing was social inequality. There are various types of inequality in our society. We can find economic inequality, racial inequality, and gender inequality etc in society.

Max Weber used status, party, and class for three major dimensions to see social inequality and sociologists define stratification in terms of socioeconomic status (SES). SES can be measured by education, wealth, income, and occupational prestige, which reflect power, wealth, and prestige. Power is the ability that let people must do whether they want or not. Power is divided into two types, legitimate power and illegitimate power that each of them are authority and coercion. Property refers to sum of one's entire possessions.
Prestige refers to reputation or evaluation of a person's position in society.

This writing shows an inequality caused by the socioeconomic status observed in the United States. In the United States, the upper class monopolizes 97 percent of the whole wealth, while the rest of the class shares about 3 percent of the wealth. Also, the writing suggest reasons why inequality continues in society. The upper class uses several methods to maintain their status. First, they control the means of production. Second, culture teaches us to accept inequality naturally. The American dream tells that people can achieve wealth through their efforts, but it is merely an illusion. Moreover, education let people think inequality is acceptable and set social class. Finally, police, courts, and prisons work to protect the system of inequality.

There are dominant perspectives to see stratification like structural-functionalism and conflict theory. These two views insist oppsing arguments. Structural-functionalism argues that hierarchy is essential and profitable to society, but conflict theory insists that hierarchy harms society.

2.What is interesting?

This writing deals with interesting topics. Several years ago, I read 'Das Kapital(Karl Marx)', which is written easily for teenagers. After reading this, the contents of the book came to mind. The book told that capitalism will further widen the gap between social classes, and laborers will work as slaves for capitalists, while capitalsits will enjoy material prosperity with the wealth produced by the laborers.

I think the phenomenon of stratification is unlikely to disappear as long as the present society system remains, and the social polarization will deepen. It is bitter but, there seems to be no realistic solution to control this phenomenon.

3.Discussion

Fisrt of all, I think stratification is a problem that needs to be solved. This is because it undermines social equality. There are many different types of inequlaity like economic, gender, and racial issues.

So, I would like to hear your thoughts to gather various opinions. What is your opinion on the problem of stratification and inequality? Also, I want to discuss how can we lessen the negative effect of it.
