Introduction to sociology/Race and Ethnicity/Dayoung Lee

1.Summary
A race is human population which is believed to be distinguished from others. It is classified based on real or imagined physical differences like skin color etc. Race is also controversial because it influeneces on the formation of social classes. Traits that are commonly used in racial classification include nationalities, tribe, religious faith, shared language, shared culture, and shared traditions.
There are two opinions on how to understand race among scholars. It is debatable whether race is a social construction or a biological lineage. But the best approach to this problem is to combine two perspectives.
Racism is caused by bias, discrimination and prejudice. The types of racism include historicla racism, racial profiling, color-blind racism. Also, genocide is another kind of racism.

2.Interesting or newly learned
Through this article, I was able to raise my understanding of racial matters. I have never regarded or thought academically about race, so I was glad to learn professional knowledge by reading this article. It was also a useful time for learning what is racial discrimination.
Racism is an important issue that is always socially oriented. We are constantly hearing about racism in the news. But there was no idea why racism is happening and what types of racial discrimination are there concretely. I can widen my thought of the concept of racism by reading it, so I think it was good opportunity to me.

3.Discussion
What criteria can distinguish race? Frankly speaking, I can not clearly distinguish what is one's race unless they are marked with overt features like skin color. To me, westerners are Westerners, Asians are Asians. So I want to know information if there is a more specific and concrete racial classification. And I would like to discuss whether it is proper and appropriate to distinguish race through those means.
Also, I think classifying human race is nonsense in the globalized society. I would like to exchange each other's opinions of it.
