Introduction to Sociology/Race and Ethnicity / Hyeonjik Kim

1. Sumary

First, this page begins by explaining concepts of race and ethnicity. Based on the information on the page, the criteria for classifying race and ethnicity is whether something that we want classify is divided internally or externally. Next, the page explains the changing definition of race according to age. This part covers the description of the ancient Egyptian book, The Book of Gates, which is said to classify races for the first time, and the racial concepts of the 19th and 20th centuries. This page then shows that there is a claim that the concept of race is just a concept made by 'human', that is, a claim that race is a social construct. Tables and graphs are used as a basis for supporting this claim. In the biology and genetics section, this page describes the race as viewed from the perspective of biology and genetics as the title suggests. Next, the combining approach, which is a view combining the above two views, is explained.

If the content up to this point mainly focuses on the concept of race, the following content describes racial issues, ie, prejudice, bias, discrimination. This page explains racism by dividing it into individual, structural, historical, and so on. After presenting the concept of minorities and adding an explanation of racial Stratification , this page ends with presenting his own view on racial discrimination.

2. Interesting point

As I have said before, I tend to prefer a composite viewpoint that mixes multiple perspectives rather than sticking to one viewpoint. That's why the combined approach of this page gave me psychological satisfaction and made today topic more interesting by letting me see the event again through my preferred perspective.

3. Concern (Not about this page, but about racism)

Colombian soccer players are taking a racist gesture during the match between Korea and Colombia on November 10th.

The above picture shows recent racial discrimination. Korean football fans commented badly on the Instagram account of a Colombian soccer player who had acted racially, and the player's Instagram account was turned into private. There was also a user who commented 'Nigger slave'. Because there were blacks who were slaves in Colombia in the past. I don't think racism is the right solution to racism. It is regrettable that this happened in Korea, which can be said to be a country with a fairly high level of knowledge. This has been around for a long time. Some people are angry when foreign whites discriminate against Asians, but they don't mind scaring Southeast Asian people for saying that they have a disgusting smell and say their skin is black. Of course, racial discrimination should be avoided, but our dual attitude should also be improved. Through self-reflection by education, this is the attitude we should pursue in learning.
