Introduction to Sociology/Q&A(11.20)/Bokyung Kim

Q. Is this ranking a sign of a problem that should be addressed?

A. I think that gender inequality is serious in South Korea. It seems that our country still thinks that men are superior to women. In fact, men sometimes receive more wages at work than women. This is a sign of a problem that must be addressed.

Q. Why fewer women enroll in college/university in Korea than men?

A. In past Korean society, women often married and stayed at home rather than getting a job. For this reason, women often did not study at university. However, in the present Korean society, women often get a job. So many women go to college like men and learn what they want to study. Nevertheless, I think the reason why the number of enrolled women is less than that of men is because the number of women is small.

Q. What kind of changes are needed to resolve gender inequality?

A. In order to resolve gender inequality we must eliminate stereotypes. We unconsciously hold that men are superior to women. The inequality problem can be solved by eliminating such thoughts. It should also legally regulate behaviors that cause gender inequalities, such as giving more wages to men and hiring men first.
