Introduction to Sociology/Conflict theory/Jeong-Ho Moon

1. Summary

Basic premise of conflict theory
: There are individuals and groups in society and strive to maximize their share in the limited resources that humans want.
Conflicts and competition arise inevitably because resources are limited.

Theoretical assumptions
Interaction: A conflict occurs as a result of human interaction.
Change: conflict and change are normal and inevitable in society
Competition: Competition for scarce resources is part of all social groups. If everyone has the necessary resources, the conflict will not exist.

Prime terms used in  conflict theory

  • Class struggles: struggles between groups that have different socioeconomic status in the same society. This group is competing to control economic, political and social resources.
  • Ideology
  • Social class
  • deviation
  • The proletariat: a working class that does not have the resources, land or tools used to produce the goods of the bourgeoisie called Proletata in Marx's theory of economic conflict
  • Bourgeoisie: In Marx's theory of economic conflict, the capitalist class that owns the means of production of resources, land, etc.
  • capitalism
Conflict theory also argues that modern societies, the criminal justice system and criminal law operate for rich and powerful social elites and consequently operate as a policy to control the poor.

Inequality of wealth and power
The US considers the principle of equality, equality, competence, and effort as important, and economic and social inequality is very high.
Conflict theory supporters argue that crimes and criminal laws in modern society are designed to benefit and subordinate the lower classes while at the same time benefiting from the higher classes.
Television theft can be punished more than stealing millions of dollars through illegal business practices.
Social status affects the rate of substance abuse. The lower the rank, the more dependent on the drug.

2. Interesting Point

'Conflicts and competition arise inevitably because resources are limited.'
'If everyone has as many resources as they need, the conflict will not exist.'

I come up with some ideas after above two sentences.
Let's discuss my ideas in '3. discussion'

3. discussion

1. Can we make sufficient resources everyone satisfied it?

I think we can make sufficient resources everyone satisfied it. However, it possible specific products.
Also although sufficient resources exist, the resource can be changed from sufficiency to deficiency.(for example: water, air)

2. Do you really think that the conflict disappears when the resources become infinite?

I think  conflicts won't disappear
Let's take the example of agricultural products. Nowadays, we can produce agricultural products can feed everyone on earth. But, starvation still exists.
