1. Summary
Collective behavior refers to a voluntary social phenomenon that does not reflect the structure of the existing society (law, custom, institution). It can be defined as non-conforming behavior, or deviation.
There are three differences between collective behavior and group behavior.
1. collective behavior involves limited and short-lived social interaction while groups tend to remain together longer
2. collective behavior has no clear social boundaries; anyone can be a member of the collective while group membership is usually more discriminating
3. collective behavior generates weak and unconventional norms while groups tend to have stronger and more conventional norms
Also there are four traditional forms of collective action in sociology.
·The crowd
·The public
·The mass
·The social movement
There is controversy among sociologists today about where to include in "collective action", but includes additional actions such as rumors, riots, trends and fashion.
So, why should we study collective behavior?
Because understanding the collective behavior by learning practical importance can change the social element. This provides the movement members with the tools they need to succeed.
2. New/Interesting things I learned
I was interesting that rumors are considered collective action. When I was read this text, I was just thinking of rumors as a simple political communication strategy. However, rumor have a three fundamental characteristics. In addition, there are various types of rumors.
1. Pipe dream rumors, which reflect public desires and wished-for outcomes
2. Bogie or fear rumors that reflect feared outcomes
3. Wedge-driving rumors that intend to undermine group loyalty or interpersonal relations
3. Discussion Point
Rumors vary in scope, including both private and public. Then, are there any kinds of rumors except rumors in the text? Also, rumors say that the negative spreads faster and has a greater impact than good. What do you think is the reason for this?

I believe that the most fundamental effects of human psychology are due to the salience effect and malicious effects. People are more confident about negative information and poor information is scarce, which makes it remarkable and remainders.
