Introduction to Sociology/Collective behavior/Hyeon Jik Kim

1. Summary

Introduction) This section first explains what the concept of collective behavior is and then helps illustrate the reader's understanding. It also helps readers to have a clear understanding of collective behavior by comparing collective behavior with group behavior. Finally, this section is concluded by providing information on what sociology perceives as collective behavior.

Why Study Collective Behavior?) The title is what this section is about. By studying collective behavior, we can minimize some of the side effects created through collective behavior, we can promote people's behavior so that they can change society more properly.

Crowds) This section explains that the concept and type of the crowd, and that when crowd behavior is badly altered, it is shaped like a mob or riot. This section briefly explains the mob that the crowd behavior is for violent purposes, and the riot is a violent crowd behavior without specific goals.

The concept of a diffuse crowds is presented, and several theories of crowd behavior are introduced.

First, the contagion theory is a theory that the individuals belonging to the crowd are influenced by the crowd. There is a problem that the individuals belonging to the crowd are regarded as irrational and the individual behavior is neglected.

Convergence theory is a theory that individuals in the crowd have the same idea. The problem with this theory is that it excludes the possibility that an individual can change by belonging to a group.

Emergent-norm theory combines the above two theories.

Panic) In this section, the concepts of panic, moral panic, and the examples of moral panic are presented.

In addition, a explanation of the riot, mass hysteria, fad, and rumors are followed on this page.

2.Interesting point

It was interesting to say that some of the criticisms of the convergence theory are that people sometimes act in groups that they would not be alone. Because I read this part and thought, Reinhold Niebuhr's claim, that even a society of moral individuals can be immoral.

3. Disscussion

What do you think about Niebuhr's view I mentioned above? Of course, according to what we learn on this page today, society can be immoral, even though that society is made up of moral individuals. Please let me know your thoughts that you had before you saw this page.

+Though Niebuhr's thoughts are about society, not group, society is also one of a group, so it does not matter!, i think.
