Introduction to Sociology/Collective behavior/Mingyeong Kim
1. Summary
Collective behavior refers to a voluntary
social process and event among members of society. These collective actions are
not always positive, but also a deviant behavior. These collective behaviors
are studied because they can find ways to cope with the following collective
behaviors: One can see how people behave, what goes after them, and how they
come to conclusions. The components of collective actions include the
following. The first is the crowd. A crowd means a group of people who share
their purpose, purpose, and influence. However, when these crowds face a
violent goal, they call it a mob. Theories of mass behavior include contagious
theory, converging theory, and emergent theories. Next, there is a sudden panic
that dominates people's thoughts and often affects groups of people. In
addition, riots include riots, mass healing, fade, and rumors.
2. New learning / What was interesting
I learned that there are two theories in
gathering groups of people like the crowd. The first is that there is a
contagion theory affecting the members of the group, and the second is that a
certain group of people gathered at the first place. I think both theories are
valid.
3. Discussion
As mentioned in Question Two, I think both
the theory of contagion and the theory of convergence are valid. Regarding
this, one might wonder if one theory is clearer. If anyone thinks so, I'd like
to hear about why I think so.
