1. Summary
This text is about race and ethnicity. First, races are classified on the basis of biological differences and physical differences among humans. Examples of the differences mentioned above include skin color and facial characteristics. Also, races are externally assigned by other individuals. Ethnicity are related to race, but they are not classified as physical differences. The ethnicity can be bound by social characteristics, social characteristics have tribal and religious beliefs, and languages shared with others. racial classifications are related to racism and are changing over time. The criteria for classifying races are becoming increasingly socially. There are also various aspects of racism. Cultural racism, individual-level racism, structural racism. The issue of racism is important because racism is more likely to result in genocide. The last part of the text also mentions minorities. Depending on the situation, minorities are generally subgroups that do not form the majority of the population. Compared to the dominant group, it has small power and disadvantage.
2. New/Interesting/Unusual things I learned
I knew that race was classified on several criteria. I knew that the number of criteria increased with time. But before reading this text, I did not think that the standards were socially relevant. I thought I would simply divide it into an outward appearance like skin color. I thought that the more the number of mixed-race people, the more the race classification was increased. In this text, however, social characteristics are also included in the criteria for classifying races, which is different from what I had previously thought.
3. Discussion
As I have mentioned above, the criteria for dividing race are increasing over time. I believe that standards that include social characteristics as well as outward characteristics of humans will continue to increase in the future. In this situation, I wonder what will happen if the results classified by those standards do not differ. If you set standards and classify humans, but you do not see any difference between the classified races, then you think the criteria are meaningless. What do you think?
