Introduction to Sociology / Race and Ethnicity / Geonwoo Lee

1.summary

This article is about race and ethnicity. Race can be categorized on the basis of physical differences, including morphological features such as skin color and facial features. The ethnicity is related to the race mentioned above. But it does not classify humans as physical differences, like race. Ethnicity classify humans based on their social characteristics. Social characteristics include language, culture, tradition and religious beliefs shared with others. Subsequently, ethnic classifications are important because they are related to racism. Over time, the standards for sharing races are becoming diverse. The standards include social characteristics. Next, there are many different racism. Individual-level racism, structural racism, cultural racism. It is important to discuss racism because if racism intensifies in the future, it may lead to an inhumane genocide.

2.interesting

I was surprised to see the standards that divide the race with the text. After reading this text, I learned that there are so many standards for classifying races. Over time, many social traits have emerged, and many races have been categorized as a result of standards including their social characteristics. I can think of more standards and races to come. What is more interesting is that now the classified races can later be classified as other races because of the new standards.

3.discussion point

As I said before, the number of races is getting bigger with time. Because social characteristics are emerging and standards for racial classification are renewed. I have a question here. Obviously there are criteria to classify races. The criteria are not standards for the hierarchy. It is a standard for classifying humans horizontally. But I do not know why racism is happening. I do not know why white people believe that they are superior to black people and why. What do you think the answer to this question is?
