1. Summary
This article tells us about race and ethnicity. A race is a term which usually represented as physical differences, and it also has a belief that there is a distinction in some way from other people. People find differences between races in different skin colors of them or characteristics that they have. An ethnicity, which has something to do with race, is not a term for physical differences. It contains the social traits which shared by people. For example, there is nationality, tribe, religious faith, etc.
The definition of race has changed through history. Racial differences are still important issues in society, so U.S governments have tried to make their own definition of it.
There are two stans in how race should be understood. First one is the stans which believe that race is an artificial distinction created by people. And in the second one, there are sociologists who believe that race is a useful measure.
2, 3. Interesting & new things, discussion point
It was good to know the various aspects of race and ethnicity. For me, a paragraph which related to racism was most interesting. People are really trying hard to erase the absence of racism, but today racism is still going on. I think cultural racism in Korea is really serious, too. There are lots of children from multicultural families, but I think children who have the Caucasian parent are more easy to adapt to this society than children who have the southeast Asian parent. Our society still has a tendency that southeast countries are poor, so , I think, people think we are at a higher class than them. Children who are white mixed-race is easily accepted by others, while other mixed race children go through some troubles. And I was interested when I read this comment on online. It was said, you can see the white mixed-race children in tv(commercial, show programs), but you can see others(children from multicultural family, but who has no caucasian parent) on the documentary. I think in this comment, documentary refers to a program that shows family who needed financial help from tv shows. Why does this situation happens? What do you think about it?
