Information Sociology/Questions about gender/Jeong Hyeonsu

We learn gender roles through socialization, for example – with toys.

What toys are marketed for boys, and what for girls? What do we learn through playing with gendered toys?

Most of the toys for girl are designed to doing make-up or household chores such as babysitting and cooking. However, most of the toys for boys offer experience in adventure, racing cars, or becoming heroes. The difference between girls and boys toy show that gender role socialization is achieved by toys through childhood. It enhances the patriarchal system that men make and are active, and women should do housework. Recently, the toy market is a movement to remove gender categories in order eliminate gender stereotype.

Why ratio of female to male fertiary enrollment (20%) in South Korea?

South Korea is a patriarchal society. it expects different roles to women and men. The success of men in the society is to gain fame with a good job, but the success of women in the society is being married to a wonderful husband, becoming a good wife, a mother. Such a social atmosphere makes it unnecessary for women to go to college.

What kind of changes are needed?

We should realize gender role is not natural, but it is made through society, and try to break it. Even small things should be questioned whether this is caused by gender stereotypes or gender discrimination. Crucially, we should listen to women's words. Listen to the voices of those who have been excluded, not the positions of men whose vested interest. In summary, we should be feminist.
