Introduction to Sociology/Politics/Minjeong Lee

1. Summary

Politics is a process that people make social economic decisions. Political power helps groups to allow distribution of public resources such as labour and wealth. Authority is often used to be confused with power, but the meaning of two words differs. Authority signifies a claim of legitimacy, the justification and right to exercise power. Max Weber divided legitimate authority by three types : Rational-legal authority, Traditional authority, Charismatic authority. In most modern nation-states, the government has the authority to force people to behave in certain ways. This can justify using violence when the government regulates individuals. In types of governments, there are Monarchy, Democracy, Totalitarianism, Oligarchy, Communist State, Theocracy.

2. New/Interesting/Unusual things I learned

The difference between the Totalitarianism and the Communist State was most interesting. North Korea's case was the most familiar, so I thought the two systems were the same. Totalitarianism is opposed to liberalism or individualism by putting political power ahead of people's political and social and cultural life, as opposed to liberalism and individualism. Communist State, on the other hand, is opposed to capitalism by pursuing co-production and joint distribution.

3. Discussion

Since Totalitarianism considers groups more important than individuals, the government controls the individual, and Communism denies private property. Then, don't you think Communist State also consider groups more important than individuals?

  1. We know that the current communist countries are Laos, Vietnam, North Korea, China, and Cuba, but it is hard to get accurate answers to your questions because Each country does not bring Marx's socialist ideas as it is, but they will be using his theory by changing a little or a lot.
But in Marx's communist position, as I searched, I can answer "No!" To your question.
The reason he forbids private property in his theory is that the property, which is the product of human labor, has dominated the person who created it upside down.
He recognized this phenomenon as a concept of human self-alienation.
In short, communism from him meant not the collective ownership of mere property but the overcoming of human alienation through it and the active recovery of humanity (human nature). -http://terms.naver.com/entry.nhn?docId=1063383&cid=40942&categoryId=31606-

So, in other words, the reason that he did not allow private property in his theories is that its purpose is to restore humanity through it and to overcome human alienation, not because he put more weight on the majority than individuals

    1. Thank you for your detailed answer. I didn’t know that communism means the overcoming of human alienation through it and the active recovery of humanity. Now I recognized the difference between totalitarianism and communism.
