1. Summary
- What is Politics?
Politics is what to rule the country properly through the socioeconomic decision-making. It is composed of social relations involving authority, power, and violence. To hold power legitimately, various types of government exist.
The kinds of governance are Monarchy, Democracy, Totalitarianism, Oligarchy, Communist State, and Theocracy. Most countries adopted Democracy, while some communist countries still remain. In the past, it was in the form of direct democracy, but it became impossible as the population grew. Therefore, It developed in the form of representative democracy.
In representative democracy, politics is operated by political parties, which are groups of people with the same political opinions. These party politics are divided into the United States' two-party system and the Swedish multi-party system. Political parties representing the people are elected by ballot. Voting tendencies have different characteristics depending on sex, age, race, and class.
2. Interesting things
As it mentioned, the class affects voting results. The middle ad upper classes mainly support the conservative party, and the poor tend to support the progressive party. But there are many class betrayal votes. Then, why do people vote for a party that does not represent their interests? This is because according to Veblen's theory of leisure class. the leisure class system deprives a lot of the means of survival from the lower classes, exhausting their energy, leading them to a point where they can not make the necessary efforts for learning and adoption of new private habits. It contributes to conservatism in the end.
3. Discussion
What specific efforts can the government make in order for the lower classes to vote for political parties that can represent their interests?
