1. Summary
This text explains us introduction of deviance, deviance theory, crime statistics, and social control. Deviance means the behavior that violates cultural norms. Deviance theory is divided into formal deviance and informal deviance. There are many deviance theories: Social-Strain Typology, Structural-Functionalism, and Labeling theory. This text also show us crime statistics with graphs that supports it. This includes incarceration rates and populations, gender, race, homicide. There are two general types of social control: formal social control, and informal social control. At the end, this text tell us current research about video games and deviance, tattoos, sexual violence on college campuses.
2. What was interesting
It was so interesting that deviance is divided into formal deviance, and informal deviance. Formal deviance's example is crime, informal deviance refers to violations of informal social norms. Robert K. Merton's Social-Strain Typology was also interesting. And that is divided in five types: conformity, innovation, ritualism, retreatism, rebellion.
It was also interesting that current research of tattoos. That is, tattoos's changing meanings.
3. Discussion point
These days, people who tattoo is increasing and types of tattoos are also becoming diversified. In the past, social awareness of tattoos was bad. These days, such awareness has improved. However sometimes, it is still regarded as deviance. Then, how do you think about tattoos? I want to know your opinions.
I think positive about tattoo. Although, still the perception about tattoo of older generations is not good. However, countless people carry various tattoos now. Tattoos do not mean that they belong to a negative group anymore. Moreover, It is predicted that the technique of identifying health conditions with tattoos will also be used in the medical industry. Considering Most of young people consider tattoo, tattoo will not be regarded as a deviance soon.
