Introduction to Sociology/Deviance/shin min kyung

Summary

Deviance means some acts that violate cultural norms. Norm is social expectations given to members of society. There are two types of deviance. The first, the violation of formally enacted laws and it is reffered to as formal deviance. For instace, robbery, rape, murder, and assault. Second is unformal deviance. It depends on cultural differences, and also valuable as the cultural norms are relative. According to Psychological and Biological Explanations, deviance is classified five types. Conformity, Innovation (Rejecting legal means to accomplishment), Ritualism, Retreatism, Rebellion.
Deviance is accepting norms, but breaking others apart to achieve their goals at the same time. According to Functionalism, deviance has very important role. Deivance distinguishes acceptable behavior or not. This division is siginificant function to reestablish cultural values and norms. When deviance deviate from the funcitonalism, it is considered as means which change with society.
Society must be changed while society remains their balance, and deviance plays an important role.
Deviance sometimes reflect imbalance of power. Salarymen crimes are a crime prepetrated by higher social class. Tax evasion, insider trading, bribery, public corruption. FBI and ministry of Justice Statistics don't make public clear startistics about salarymen crimes.
Larbelling theory means that crime occurs on a particular label that depends on one person. And this theory argues that a deviation is a result of people being forced to deal with certain identities and adopt the identity.
Social control means numerical ways to bring back social members through using socio-cultural norms.  Likewise, social control has two types.

Interesing

The United States is an advanced country at economy, but their social systems and welfare are inferior to economy. US is a country with a wide range of problems and reponsibility as well as a wide range of freedoms. Crime drugs and firearm accidents as well as murder and robbery occur frequently. There are crimes committed by individuals, but crimes committed by society are also numerous. A premeditated crime committed by individulas deserves to be punished. But if the background is society, US ought to make efforts to improve and reform. But the laws of the US are too strict. Although there are reasons for their poplation, the number of prisoners in prison is the highest in the world. The rate of repeat inmates amounts to 67 percent. It is proof that jails don't care about the care of criminals. American prisons are just commited to isolating criminals from society. Prisons don't consider when their prisoners go back to society. The labels on criminals in the US have tremendout leverage. For example, a man who committed a crime for survival, when he goes back to society he no longer gets anything necessary for survival. There's a vicious circle of people committing crimes. The US has no interest to them. If they really want to reduce crime rate, they need social restructing and rehabilitation of inmates.

Discussion

Why did the tattoo become a symbol of deviation in society? What images do you imagine when you think of someone who has tattoos? I come up with two images. Tattoed on the back of the yakuza, and tattooed on the arms of the famous singer Harry Styles.
Do people who get tattoos think they are deviant? Tattoos often get disadvantage when people get a job or have a test to be army officer.
People suggest 'if you want to live quietly, don't have a tattoo.' Tattoos are legal, but are they deviant in society?

Comments

  1. Now tattoos are legitimate, but they seem to be deviating as you say. But more in the past, tattoos were illegal and deviant. In the case of Korea, people in the past thought that the physical scar was a sin not preserving the body inherited from the parents. Because of this recognition, Koreans seem to think of tattoos as deviant behavior. But nowadays more and more people think that tattoo is just an act of self-expression. In other words people's perception of tattoos is changing, and in the future tattoos will be legitimate and just an act of self-expression, not deviant behavior.
