Introduction to Sociology/deviance/heechan kim

1.summary

This article introduces various theories and various studies on the theme of deviance. First of all, deviations are divided into two types. The first is the official deviation from what is prescribed by the law. The second is an unofficial deviation that has not been codified by law but is related to morality. There are various theories about deviation. Among them, exciting theory is conflict theory and labeling theory. Conflict theory is that deviations arise between people due to the disparities in wealth or power that arise when resources or power are not distributed equally in society. labeling theory says that if an individual is stigmatized as a criminal to others, it plays an important role in deviations.  About Deviations Crime statistics are not perfect data, but they are worth a look. It is also the result of crime statistics that the probability of deviating according to sex and race is different. Usually deviations are solved through social control and there are two kinds as deviating from social control. Current deviations are still being studied and will continue to be an important topic in sociology.

2.new/interesting

What I was interested in reading was that perception of violent video games do not make people violent. People who think like me usually think that if a person plays a violent and cruel game, such as a gun shooting game, their personality or behavior will change more violently than before. However, according to this perception, people who play violent games are able to distinguish between the fact that they are tolerated in context, but not in reality. This explanation is somewhat correct, but it is hard to agree 100% personally.

3.discussion

According to structural functionalism in this article, deviation is necessary for our society to some degree. Because deviance gives us a relative perception. It is like knowing the true taste of happiness if you do your hard work. But deviations are different from hardships. Deviation can damage not only the person but also the faultless person, which can lead to crime. I wonder what your thoughts are.

Comments

  1. I was interested in research about violent video games just like you.
Some of the informal deviances do not harm others and may give a sense of happiness to an individual but a formal deviance, such as a crime causes damage to other people. So it is necessary social control to formal deviances.
I think social control should be strong, and it should apply equally to all who commit the same offense. If the social control is weak, the order of our society will collapse.
