Introduction to Sociology/Deviance/Dayoung Lee

1.summary

Deviance is a departure from social and cultural norms. The norm is the behavior that groups or communities expect towards members of the community. Deviance is divided into two types of deviant activities:formal deviance and informal deviance.
There are many theories about deviation, and there is a theory of Robert K. Merton's social-strain typology. Robert K. Merton proposed the types of deviant behaviors, which are based on two criteria. First one is person's motivation or adherence to cultural goals and second one is person's beliefs on how to achieve a person's goals. Morton said there are five types of deviations that are based on these two criteria.

Conformity is accommodating cultural goals and means of achieving those goals. Innovation involves accepting cultural goals, but includes rejecting traditional and/or legal means of achieving these goals. Ritualism is the rejection of cultural goals and routinized acceptance that is a means of attaining goals. Retreatism rejects both of the cultural goals and the traditional means of attaining those goals. The rebellion rejects both cultural and traditional methods, but attempts to replace both elements of society with different goals and means.

2.Interesting

I hadn't thought about deviant behavior very much. After reading, I felt that a deviation was something that was so vague and extensive. Also, it was interesting that deviance is devided into formal deviance and informal deviance. When we use the word " deviate ", we tend to define it simply as "what we don't do normally." However, this article sorted out the meaning and variety of deviation in a more detailed manner. I could understand the difference between a simple meaning of deviation usually used in common people and the term used in social studies. It was quite interesting.

3.discussion

Our society seems to be inclined to think bad about deviation. However, I think adequate deviation provides a good experience to relieve stress while enjoying a break from a consistent life. Of course, this is when the kind of deviation does not violate the law. In that sense, I think it's inappropriate to think that deviant behavior is wrong, and I'd like to hear opinions about it.
