1. Summary
This article explains the way of social & economic decisions, that is, politics.
There are 3 elements in politics, that are power, authority & violence.
Max Weber identified and distinguished three types of legitimate authority.
First, legal authority (ex.the US President). Second, traditional customs like the King of Saudi Arabia. Thrid, a charismatic authority.
There are various forms of government :
Monarchy,Democracy,Totalitarianism, Oligarchy, Communist State, Theocracy.
Party political systems vary from country to country. In this article, the United States and Sweden are examples.
In United States, there are two main parties in presidential contention:
Democratic Party ,Republican Party.
Sweden has a multi-party system, with numerous parties in which no one party often has a chance of gaining power alone, and parties must work with each other to form coalition governments.
And for a variety of reasons, voting patterns are influenced by gender, age races, and rank factors.
In developed countries, the turnout rate for women is high.
but also, women are underrepresented in political positions.
Young people are much less likely to vote than are older people and are less likely to be politicians. In the United States, seniors have more power, louder voice and influence than young people.
2. new, interesting, or unusual items learned
I learned that there are many types of government.
I simply thought that democracy and communism were the typical forms of government.(Through the contrast between North Korea and South Korea)
However, I learned that there are many kinds of communism.
As I recently read literature like Milan Kundera & George Orwell , I was curious about totalitarianism and it was good to be introduced here.
I wonder if there is a position of totalitarian advocates? What do they claim?
how?
3. Discussion Questions
Is there any badness in the form of government itself?
Maybe all the problems are not in the form but in the human being?
If so, Will not we 'focus on denouncing the existence of a particular form of government' make us neglect the human problem?
