Introduction to Sociology/ Soicialization/ Cho ji won

1.Summary
This article is about socialization. Socialization is a process that makes people function in social life. This socialization is composed of various elements. However, scholars have different opinions about which elements are most important. So, scholars needed a standard that would clarify socialization. That is why scholars set three basic goals of socialization. Three goals are 'impulse control and the development of a conscience', role preparation and performance, including occupational roles, gender roles, and roles in institutions such as marriage and parenthood', 'the cultivation of sources of meaning, or what is important, valued, and to be lived for'. This socialization is culturally relativistic. Socialization is different for people of different cultures, such as race, class, and gender.
Socialization is generally divided into two parts. Two parts are called primary socialization and secondary socialization. The primary socialization is the period when the basic identity of the individual is formed due to the socialization that occurs during childhood. It is secondary socialization that a more concrete change takes place. These two socialization largely differ in content, context, and response. There is also a broad(about self-expression) and narrow(about  obedience) concept of socialization, but this is rarely used.
Socialization is naturally learned in society, but there are some who can not adapt to society because socialization does not occur properly. These people become problematic in society and become isolated from separate controlled agencies. These include mental hospitals and prisons. Their goal is to re-socialize them and adapt them to society.
In conclusion, socialization is an adaptation process for living in society. Several factors influence and complicate this process. This socialization is relative to each culture and we must understand it.

2.Interesting point
An interesting part of this article was the socialization of cultural relativity. In this article, it is said that socialization differs according to each class and culture. In this article, socialization that appears differently for each class is natural, so it can not be an evaluation. But socialization, which is different according to class differences, already imposes a difference on them. I thought it was very similar to the 'Abitus' of Bourdieu. This idea may be my own idea, but I think it is interesting because I think so.

3.Discussion point
In this article, socialization is a natural process to learn to live in society and is not judged. But sociologist 'Michel Foucault' says society's justice is judged by power. According to his theory, it is thought that society is forced by what we are currently socializing. I wonder how they think about it.

Comments

  1. I agree with Foucault's opinion. An example of this is the ban on the same surname and the same family origin marriages. In the past, the same surname and the same family origin marriage was an act prohibited by law, that is, a socially enforced act. But now, the same surname and the same family origin marriage is not prohibited by law. In other words, the content of socializing us has changed.
