Religion and Sociology _ What was the relationship?
What is religion?
When I looked at religion in sociological sight, I thought it could be a more objective observation.
Based on various theories of sociology, I could look at various perspectives of religion.
In the original text, the definition of religion is divided into three sections.
To see religion as something other than daily life, answering questions about existence, and collective beliefs about the supernatural
Five religions of Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, and Judeo were mentioned as representative religions. The representative criteria are the religious influence and the size of the group.
The religion that is emphasized in the original text is Christianity.
I had a lot of questions about religion, and it was a very interesting story that I had no contact with Christianity.
Through the classification of churches and ecclesia, denominations, and sects, I could understand about the members embraced by the religion and the competition among religions.
< Religion and the Religion Sociology >
* In this section, I will try to talk about my thoughts with an explanation of the religious theory covered.
Through various social theories, I looked about 'what was the functoins of the religion in our society, what roles religion plays in individual life' and so on.
----- Can we judge religion_Right from Wrong?-----
after reading, I thought the right from wrong about the religion is very difficult to judfe because it has so much perspectives to look over. Let's find out about the following points.
1) Structural functionality
A representative scholar is Emile durkheim.
He notes the functional approach of religion and the role of religion in social cohesion and control.
(opinion)
Although functional theory is a theory that is backed by group stability, but it takes a negative stance in terms of causing control over that group.
There is a concern that control through religion could be controlled through human beliefs and creeds.
If these controlled person assembled in large group, and if there is a possibility that the direction of this control could be wrong, the question(as to wehter this feature could serve as a pure fntion of religion) will left alone.
2 ) Social Conflict
The leading scholar is Marx. who expressed religion as opium.
and this phrase, "religion is opium of the people" was very impressive to me.
.
(Opinion )
Marx will surely be a person who has experienced social phenomenon and era in which religion is very influential.
In spite of the fact that he lived in such an era, he denied the mainstream religion and showed his resistance spirit.
At that time, vested interests did unfair treatment to proletarian class , and religion played a role to the working class, to return back in to the previous life and repeat a routine endlessly by praying.
I could remind the appearance of Marx who saw and criticized the system of that time.
3 ) Social constructivist
The representative scholar is Berger.
They present a naturalistic account of the origin of religion.
To them, religion is the outcome of a sacred depiction of the elements of society
they also tell us that in some societies, it is said that it may be structured by strengthening faith to reality.
( Opinion )
I had never met The theory that religion contributed to the formation of social structure before, and as I recalled a few religions, I could see that this theory had been applied to quite a few religions.
4 ) Religious pluralism
It is a theory that respects the attitude toward common beliefs among religions.
( Opinion )
I think that this is the most appropriate one. The respect for different religions in this aspect was outstanding.
In Korea, religious propagation takes place in a variety of ways.
An utter stranger appeared preposterous place and continued to Convey god's word, not allowed me to pass over it. and this was what I had experienced the propagation.
He kept following me from the departure station until two transit tours.
There may be various ways of spreading, but I think that the propagation of my personal experience was a sense of rejection and reluctance.
Such propaganda has raised the anxiety and fear of the religion, as well as the fear of the religion.
I thought that no one had the right to impose religion.
This point of view, which acknowledges the freedom of religion and says that differences and conflicts between religions can be overcome, has come to me very positive.
This point of view, which acknowledges the freedom of religion and says that differences and conflicts between religions can be overcome, has come to me very positive.
5 ) Social Psychology
It is the viewpoint that it is the reason for the existence of religion to be able to answer the existential questions which are difficult to deal with
Fear is said to be one of the great elements of religious construction.
The presence of God gives a sense of relieving fear of death.
(opinion)
I thought of Shamanism or Totemism, the first thought of mankind. Although all religions have different origins, I could think that these elements certainly worked in strengthening religion.
I think the combination of several elements that are rooted in faith have contributed to the organization of religion.

( The last thing I want to share with our class)
My mother is Buddhist, and my father is Catholic.
When I went to my grandmother 's house (on my mather's side) , she took me to the temple. With her, I ate temple's meals, and hang paper lanterns .
When I went to my grandmother 's house,(on my father's side), I could always see her praying, every time.
I was born between these two families, so I did not have a big criterion for 'what is religion'
I think religion can be a sensitive topic to discuss because it can influence someone's beliefs.
I was careful about bringing up the this story, but I tried to write on the subject of religion because I wanted to break the prejudice against religion.
In fact, it seems to be able to look at religion with a slightly more objective viewpoint through five perspectives.
But, this article was focused mainly on Western perspectives.
The Oriental viewpoint was far removed from the most of the stories and were formed by the themes related to the churches. It would have been more objective if it had treated the view of oriental scholars and more religions.
