Introduction to Sociology/Sociological Theory/YERIM PARK

1. Summary

Sociologists develop theories to explain social phenomena. It is necessary to employ theory to draw the connections between seemingly disparate concepts.ex) Structural-Functionalism: society is maintained through mutual complement of social members. In other word, each an intergrated whole.

2. What was interesting

 

Feminists also have several factions. In the meantime, I was interested in the claims of the Marxist and Socialist Feminism through the article. In fact, I did not know that Marx was interested in gender problem. But it is simple. He is not only just substituting capitalism at social activities. But also he said that unpaid household labor was exploitation of labor.  Namely, It was impressive to apply capitalism to the home.

3. Discussion Point

My opnion is associated with No.2.

They(Marxist and Socialist Feminism) believe that economic inequalities are the most central form of inequality. Therefore, eliminating capitalism would get rid of gender inequalities. However, my opinion is different. Even if capitalism collapses and then economic inequality disappears, gender equality will not be realized. Because discrimination(about gender) based on stereotypes remains. Women will be gender discriminated by gender expectation throughout society.I think that what should be given priority over economic equality will overcome stereotypes through socialization ( education etc.)

1. @society vs genes?@

I think more important section is genes. A naturally superior human by gerns have a genetic advantage. For example, the fetal gene testing service market is expanding. This is because gene testing is popularized as DTC(Direct To Consumer) service is allowed. We can make customized management according to individual gene characteristics through DTC. 

But in china, Inspect fetal genes and then abortion if the fetus does not have 'sports genes'. This practice should be avoided.

2. @Future ethnography@ 

A nation refers to a group that shares language, culture, religion, cultural heritage, and lifestyle together. In addition, ethnography emphasizes the relationship with the environment and the region. Especially in ethnography , there are generally distinguish according to the language system. As move into the global, We do not distinguish by race. It is increasingly distinguish cultures like languages and society.So, I think ethnography is an important study.
