Introduction to Sociology/Sociological Theory / Suyeon Im

●Summary

Sociological Theory is the method that leads to the linkage between disparate concepts.
There is no dominance in every theory, and every theory gives us a convincing explanation.
This article introduces four representative sociological theories.

1. Structural-Functionalism
Structural-Functionalism explains sociological phenomena with a collective means. And relates sociological phenomena with social system.

2. Conflict Theory
Conflict theory explains the social phenomena as a system of competition.

3. Symbolic Interactionism
Symbolic Interactionism explains the social phenomena through human's communication and symbols.

4. Role Theory
Role Theory supposes that humans are guided by the expectations of individuals and others.

Each of these four theories has limitations. In addition to this, new theories such as Social Constructionism and Feminist theory emerged recently.

●What was interesting

I found it interesting to approach feminism in a variety of ways. And when I learned about "looking-glass self" in Symbolic Interactionism, I thought that I act in this way too. Because I internalize how other people view and think me.

●Discussion point

This article says that we have to lead the linkage between disparate concepts. By the way if we link completely absurd concepts, are we not making nonsense theory? Also, I wonder if one phenomenon can be explained by all sociological theories.

Comments

  1. I think if we link completely absurd concepts, sociologists devise new sociological theory which can solve absurd concepts.
And I think there are some phenomenon that can't be explained by sociological theories. Because there are mysterious phenomenon that human can't explain by scientific method.
