1. Summary
Sociological Theory is essential to explain society phenomenon. Especially, Robert Putnam's theory of relationship between television consumption and civic engagement proves well of this. Therefore, if you look into sociological theory, you can understand society better. There are many various sociological theory, this text describes prominent theories like Structural-Functionalism, Conflict Theory, Symbolic Interactionism, Role Theory, Social Constructionism, Feminist Theory, Integration Theory.
2. New/Interesting/Unusual things I learned
The Conflict Theory was most interesting.
“Inequalities in power and reward are built into all social structures. Individuals and groups that benefit from any particular structure strive to see it maintained.”
“Some people and organizations have more resources (i.e., power and influence) and use those resources to maintain their positions of power in society.”
Because I could see the modern society of Korea in this explanation. Korea lacks resources than other countries, so, there is not the end of competitions about resources and people who possess more resources have power in Korea. The authority tries to maintain a beneficial society structure for them even by using illegal methods.
3. Discussion
The Conflict Theory seems to recognize competition in various relationships positively. However, I think that we can change something or achieve what we want without the fight. The same results will be obtained through mediation or agreement. Is competition always the right way? Like candlelight rally in Choi Soon-sil scandal, Society can also change in a more peaceful way.
I think that the example of candlelight rally is an example of conflict theory.
ReplyDeleteIn conflict theory, (I think) competition for something is not necessarily a bloody fight.
The peaceful way through the candlelight rally may be also 'competition' for something.
