Introduction to Sociology/Sociological Methods/Shin min kyung

summary

Sociologists don't see their world as non-sociologists. Sociologists try to prevent social's problems before it happens, using anyalze and observation. There are a few ways that Sociologists use when they talk social life authoritatively..Authority, Experience, Logic, Tradition, Revelation, Science.
The researches Scientists or Physics use their field are called 'positivism' or 'empiricism'. Unlike it, sociology with anthropology pursue a way to understand social phenonmenon simply. Marx Webber labeled this way 'Verstehen'. In other words, this is Qualitative sociology. Qualitative sociologists use 'inductive reasoning'  unlike science. Sociologists utilize observation, hypothesis,  reasoning to understand and develop explantion of social phenonmenon to theory's shape. And scientific methods can make solid support to here. The essential scientific methods are Characterization, Hypothesis, Prediction, Testing. In the scientific pursuit, 'correaltion' and 'causation' are the most confusing realtionship. Correaltion refers to a realtionship between two or more variables in which they change together. Positive correaltion is that as one variable increases the other variable decreases. Negative correaltion refers to the opposite. Causation refers to a realtionship between two or more in which one variable causes the other, as it corresponds with some criteira. Understanding the differences between this variables is very important element to quantitative scientific process. Other two ways are 'quantitative' and 'qualitative'. Quantitative method is sociological access, invesgating social phenomenon from the point that sociologists can see and measure. Qualitative method means to investgate social phenomenon from Verstehen's point.  Rather than attempting to measure or quantify reality, qualitative sociologists explore variation in the natural world using people's sense.  Besides, there exists other methods like Objective, Critical, Subjective.
It is important to recognize sociology's limitations, we must know sociology provides us very useful tools and theroies to understand humans as social beings.

Interesing point

I think I find correct respond about my previous writings. I had to think scientific methods can be used in sociology since sociology's core is data, statistics and analyze. Actually, this is a difficult writings to me a little bit, but I feel valuable to study sociology which can unite many other discipline's methods. Among this writings, quantitative methods and qualitative methods are interesting point. I want to investigate social phenomenon using these methods and compare the results. Forward, I will take a research about 'media and society' I will use quantitative and qualitative methods.

Discussion

Can we proceed society research except scientific methods? The last part of wikipedia talks limitation of society. Previous society researches are hard to maintain because people behavior is complex and our society is constantly changing. Then, is there any way to draw something meaningful with sole sociology?
