Introduction to Sociology/Social Methods/Jaehyeon Park

1.     Summary

This article introduces the method that sociologists use when they research social phenomenon. Sociologists uses scientific methods when they study social problems, like setting hypothesis and test the hypothesis and repeat that process like in studying sciences.

And in this article there are contents that correlation and causation in quantitative social study and scientific method that are used in social studies. There is a difference in correlation and causation, that is correlation is in between two variables they have correlations but one variables happen, and the other variable doesn’t happen certainly.

Also, method can be divided into quantitative and qualitative studying, quantitative studying used in digitizing result, qualitative studying used in analyze people’s thinks rather than analyzing mathematically, scientifically. We shouldn’t violate social ethics because studying will be conducted on a people, every human’s rights must be respected.

At the conclusion, sociology research has a limit because human’s behaviors has many exceptions, but we have to research sociology continuously, that can help people’s life.

2.    interesting points.

I learned this contents from a high school course, so I was so interested in learning about what I once learned. Especially, most interesting contents was about correlation and causation. Because I caught this content in introduction to information class, and  some English paragraphs.

I was so confused about what is difference between correlation and causation because these two concepts have similar meaning so I had a difficult to distinguish two concepts.

And I treat these concepts in this wikibook and it uses example to explain difference, so I understood this difference so well and I thought it’s important that there are many correlations in social phenomenon but there is no perfect causation in sociology because there are so many exceptions in people’s behaviors.

3.    discussion

i think in the future, there are more various people in society, so there is no perfect generalization in social study. And I think we should use more qualititive method studies to understand each people's thought rather than quantitive method, so quantitive methods can be
unuseful in the future because of more, and a lot of exceptions in phenomenons.
What do you think what methods to research sociology in the future?

Comments

  1. i think that the best method in the future is java/c++
because these programming methods are very useful on statistics in modern times and still have potential.

    1. Thank you for comment:) I think so too because java/c++ is important program in statics, so in sociology, statics are useful part to analyze people's behaviors or trend dealing with big data. That's good point!

  2. I agree some point of your opinion. But I think qualitative methods still will be very useful. Because there still will be a thesis which needs to tested by qualitative theory. For example, Let’s assume that your research is deeply related to human’s mind. If you use survey method and then hear many people’s idea, that’s would be a great way to test the theory. But I think survey method can’t figure out the detailed human’s mind. So in that case, to know the human’s mind detailedly, using the qualitative methods like face to face interview or small group interview is going to be a great option. Of course, that takes more time and money, I think doing in that way is going to bring detail to your research.

    1. Thank you for comment:) I agree with you. I think quantitive method can subserve qualitative method. We can use quantitive method to analyze general thought of people's thought, and using qualititive method to investigate detail of each people's thought. So I think main method can be qualititive method, but qualititive method and quantitive method interact each other to develop social research, it can be helpful to our sociology research. That's good point!
