Introduction to Sociology/Culture/Jungho Kang

1. Summary

This article said 'Culture'. What is culture? Human is biological, but culture is non-biological of human life. Culture is artificial categorization of elements of social(human) life. Culture encompasses objects and symbols, the meaning given to those objects and symbols, and the norms, values, and beliefs that pervade social life. Culture is not static. Culture is changing over and over. For example, Korean had Patriarchal culture, but globalization progresses,  patriarchal culture is disappearing this time. Culture is symbol and meaning of everything.

2. What was interesting

I was interesting about 'Counter culture'. When I was middle school student, I was listening 'Old rock musicians' like Cream, Pink Ployd, Jimmy Hendrix and so on. Also, there is 'Hippie culture'. I search Hippie culture, and I think hippie is resistance. When a hippie culture is created, America had social problems like Vietnam War and Racism. Let's see 'Woodstock festival'. It was a space that expressed the resistance of American young people to the world. They said 'Peace and Love'. I think, Hippie culture is the best example of 'Counter culture'.

3. Discussion Point

I think there will be a conflict between 'High culture' and 'Culture relativism'. From 'high culture' perspective, there is 'BEST' culture. From 'culture relativism' perspective, there is no 'BEST' culture. Let's look at our case. We unconsciously think that classical and jazz are higher than hip and rock. And also, We think that classical, jazz, rock and hip-hop is a difference in taste. What do you think? What is right? Both is wrong? or Both is right?
