Introduction to Sociology/Culture/Jinsu Bae

1. Summary

What is culture? First, humans are organisms. Therefore, it is influenced by various things. In this article, nature and nurture are cited as biological examples. However, this article also stated that everything that human beings acquire is part of culture. This article presented norms and values beyond media, thought, and works of art. In other words, everything that affects humans is called culture. But this article highlights the fact that culture in certain societies is not strict and fully unified. This can be confirmed in the language-specific influence (Ex: group) in their respective cultures.

2. My interesting point

I have been impressed with the content of ethnocentrism and relativism in the text of this topic.

                                       William Graham Sumner(October 30, 1840~April 12, 1910(aged 69)

First, ethnocentrism was created by William Graham Sumner, a professor of political and social sciences. It has the character of looking at the world mainly from the viewpoint of my own culture. Also, people in this group have strong ties to each other. In addition, they do not recognize cultural differences in other societies, and sometimes negatively evaluate their cultural differences and discrimination.
On the contrary, cultural relativism recognizes the culture of other societies. This respects the other's culture, and sometimes culture of their own society evaluates lower than the other. Therefore, cultural relativism may weaken the sense of belonging and unity of the members of society. Also, this may lose the identity of the culture.

When I compare this big framework, I was interested in ethnocentrism. Because, I think, ethnocentrism may be the essence of my country.

3. The land of ethnocentrism, 'Korean Peninsula'

Korea is a representative ethnocentrism country. Now, personal thoughts are important worlds, so there may be differences among individuals. However, the lingering imagery of this remains.
Korea was a country of kingdom-centered to ancient times. Therefore, the roots of ethnocentrism are deep. Also, the 'Korean peninsula' was attacked by  foreign countries because of geographical conditions. This bequeath ethnocentrism, and the example is the 'Cheokhwabi'.

The problem is extreme ethnocentrism like 'Cheokhwabi'. This eventually accompanied the armed forces. I don't think there should be such violence in modern society.

In conclusion, non-aggressive ethnocentrism binds the relationship with group members and at the same time has appropriate patriotism to members. I think that, it's only needs moderately for society.

Comments

  1. Non-aggressive ethnocentrism binds relationships with group members and at the same time gives them appropriate patriotism I agree with your idea that it is appropriate for society. Extreme ethnocentrism is a way of cultivating different cultures It tends to be ignorant and neglected, so it seems to me to be negative. Therefore, you should have a feeling of loving your own culture and live as a person who respects the culture of other countries.

    1. Actually, acts of respect for other cultures will not be easy. Because culture is diverse and there are cultures that are difficult to respect. So, I think I just need to have a voice to criticize extreme culture.
