Introduction to Sociology/Culture/Heechan Kim

1.Summary

This article basically sociologically tells all about culture. From the origins of culture to theories of culture and the functions of culture. In particular, the methodology used by cultural sociologists in cultural studies in culture sociology is described in detail.

2. New/Interesting things I learned

What impressed me most was the functional part of culture. Before reading the article, I thought that culture is a means of raising the quality and value of people's lives and enabling them to live more abundantly. However, I was surprised to learn that culture not only helps such a good thing, but also promotes and maintains social inequality. Also, the fact that this bad order naturally gets used to people through culture makes me see culture from a different point of view.

3. Dicussion point

There is a cultural relativism in the text, which is the belief that the concept and value of culture can not be fully translated or fully understood by other languages. In the article, I have taken the word tranquilo in Spanish as an example, although I do not have a perfect interpretation of the word in English, but I think I can understand and use it in any situation in any country. I think that I can understand even if I do not immerse in the country when I go to live in that country. I want to hear the opinions of the students.

4. extra

1) can you think of examples of charismatic, traditional-legal leaders or governments in the history of your own country?

My idea is that the most charismatic and traditional-legal leaders  in history is General Yi Sun-sin. When the Korean Peninsula was being attacked by Japan and in a very serious crisis, General  Yi Sun-shin had many battles and won many battles despite the disadvantages. When I went to prison in unfair circumstances, I did not rebel, but I was a loyal person to the end until the end.

2)which theory do you find most interesting?

The conflict theory is most interesting. The theory of conflict argues that society is composed of individuals and groups who pursue different interests and that there is always conflict and change. I think this is the foundation of our society. So conflict theory is interesting in that it has made this fundamental theory.

3)how does gender inequality influence our live?

Gender inequality is basically judging and evaluating people as sex. When these things are activated, women have to do household chores just because they are women, and there are barriers to social advancement. Men also have the obligation to yield to women.

  1. The part you want to discuss is very consistent with what I was interested in. As for that, I agree with cultural relativism. For example, in Korea, the feeling of the words 'puleuda', 'palahda', 'puleuleuda' is different, but when it is interpreted in English, it is unified with the word 'blue'. So I think that it is cultural relativism that the whole meaning cannot be conveyed even if it can be conveyed a simple meaning, and I agree with that.
