Introduction to sociology/Culture

1.Summary
This article tell us what is culture. This article says 'culture encompasses objects and symbols, the meaning given to those objects and symbols, and the norms, values, and beliefs that pervade social life'. "The definition is understood to include two elements - that which differentiates one group or society from others and the concept of acquired or learned behavior". But in addition to this definition, there are various concepts that represent culture. For example, in the concept of 'high culture', it talks about cultures as cultivated and advanced. But culture is a concept that is always changing and relative. Therefore, culture must be recognized and understood as being.
Culture sociologists look for how people make meaning in their lives out of the different cultural elements that surround them. For this study, sociologists study cultural conflicts and observe intercultural exchanges.
In conclusion, culture is not a single meaning but a concept that can be interpreted in various ways. Because modern society is accelerating globalization, we do not have a narrow idea about culture.

2.What was interesting?
It is interesting that culture changes as society changes. For example, it is interesting that the culture that was popular in the previous society is ignored or disappears in the next society. It was interesting that cultural change and society were closely related and the power of society was so great.

3.Discussion point
According to cultural relativism, the culture of eating dog meat is not a bad thing. However, organizations such as animal care centers are seeking more stringent sanctions on dogs than other animals. If so, can they be criticized that judge culture by their values?

Comments

  1. In cultural relativism, I know cultural relativity is important in the scope of human rights that do not infringe upon human rights. If animal rights develop a little more, the culture of eating dog meat will be criticized. But now, from the standpoint of cultural relativity, animal rights organizations are likely to be criticized for judging cultures based on their own values.
