1. summary

This article is talking about the characteristics of sociology majors and advantages of majoring in sociology. Many sociologists choose their first major because they are interested in studying sociology. It varies from person to person but many sociology majors understand the basic concepts of sociology and sociological paradigms. And based on sociological concepts and paradigms, They analyze research and utilize statistics. Sociology majors are generally satisfied with sociological studies, except for graduate school and employment opportunities. Because it gives them social insight. Sociology majors can also have linguistic ability, management, and writing skills. After graduating in sociology, they can get jobs directly from various institutions or colleges.Sociology majors are  good at researching that understands consumers.  Many companys want these people. Therefore, majoring in sociology can give us a lot of advantage.

2. What was interesting/what did you learn

I was surprised to learn that majoring in sociology could bring so many advantages. After reading this writing, I felt excited that I would be able to have social insight and ability to analyze statistics. Also, I have had a prejudice that it would be hard to get a job when graduating from sociology, but after reading this writing,  that prejudice and anxiety had disappeared . I should think carefully about what  can  I do with the skills I can get in the future.

3.Discussion Questions

The writing states that we can have a lot of ability to do work after graduating from college, and we can find a job in various companies. However, in Korea, the reality is that even though graduating from sociology,  it does not seem to be guaranteed ability or employment. I would like to discuss whether the content of this writing is not overly generalized. Also, I want to discuss how we can use sociology to get a job

  1. I think sociology is the basis of all learning. So, if have sociology degree, it will be easy to learning other majors or work. It means there is POSSIBILITY to get variety field's jobs. It does not mean there is GUARANTEEING to get jobs. When you do the efforts yourself, your career can be guarantee great future jobs.

    1. I agree with you. Sociology can be the basis of all learning. Our future jobs will vary depending on our efforts. The word ‘be guaranted’ in my writing seems wrong. The word ‘possibility’ seems more appropriate. Thank you very much for your advice.

  2. in my opinion, sociology is just a study itself ,sociology is not guaranteed for taking a job for sure. if we want to get a job, we have to get licenses for taking a job.

    1. I agree with your opinion. Sociology will help us get a job, but it is not enough. If we get a lot of licenses after majoring in sociology, it will be more helpful in employment.

  3. In addition to sociology, employment in most departments is not guaranteed. The important thing is that you have to think about how to do your best in your department and how to connect your department with the job you want. and As mentioned above, if you want to get a job quickly, it is a good way to get a certificate.

    1. You are right. Jobs vary according to individual efforts. Also, it is very important to link social studies to field where we want to. I will also think about how I link sociology with field where I want to do. I think that sociology can be a basis of all fields, so it will be good to connect to other areas. Thank you for your advice.

  4. I think the essay was generalized a little. Although Sociology has existed long time ago, in Korea, it doesn't bring many merits (in my opinion) to sociology merits. The essay said, sociology brings a lot of advantages. That's why I said the essay was generalized.
