A. Summary:
This article explains the definition of theory (the relationship between two or more concepts) and explains that the process of making theory from simple data is important. And It also introduces various social theories (Structural-Functionalism, conflict theory, Symbolic Interactionism, role theory, Social Constructionism, feminism, integration theory).
Now let's summarize these various theories one by one.
1. Structural-Functionalism
:Every activity has its own important function
Structural-Functionalism is an aspect of understanding social phenomena as a functional relationship between components, while seeing that social components contribute to maintenance and integration of whole society in an interdependent relationship. This theory of function emphasizes the stability and balance of society, but it may provide a theoretical basis for maintaining existing order or power relations and neglect social changes.
2. Conflict Theory: Conflict exists in every society
Conflict theory is based on the assumption that the components and parts of society are originally in a relationship of conflict and contradiction, eventually conflict is contributing to social change. Therefore, it is stipulated that the state in which each element and parts are not conflicted is defined as legitimate by virtue of vested power, or latent state through coercion and oppression. In this way, the conflict theory assumes that conflicts in social and cultural phenomena are taken for granted, and that conflicts are changed through dialectical relations. In this sense, conflict theory is pointed out that too much cooperation and harmony exist in the social and cultural phenomenon. In addition, it emphasizes the solution of contradictions and conflicts, So it can be pointed out that the survival of society and integrated identity can be neglected.
3. Symbolic Interactionism
Society is a process of communicating and interpreting the subjective meaning of human beings. Through this, the social order is maintained and fluctuates. This is the argument of the symbolic Interactionism. What we admired and envied for something, not in itself, but because people so define and interpret. Society changes when standards and objects that people respect and envy vary. Thus, in symbolic Interactionism, it is crucial to study how human’s subjective rules and interpretations are formed, maintained and changed through the process.
4. Role Theory
Role refers to the specific status or category of an individual in a social relationship, and any action associated with that role. Role theory is a theory that seeks to identify roles, positions, and interrelationships among individuals. For example, It is not instinctive for a mother to love and raise a child. it just plays a role that society expects to mother.
And this theory assumes that everyone is willing to respond to their expected role
5. Social Constructionism
Social Constructionism studies the meaning, concept, and implications of certain factors or specific situations in society. In addition, we explore how members of the society accept and view this situation. Social Constructionism focuses on how individuals and groups organize the reality of society they see. It is the study of how social phenomena are created and systemized, known to people, and accepted as traditions. However, the explanations given in Social Constructionism may simply be misrepresented in the society.
6. Feminism
It is a term that encompasses various forms of social and political movements and theories that focus on the equality of women's rights and opportunities. The theory of feminism is divided into various fields.
7. Integration Theory
It is a theory that occurs by combining different theories to understand human behavior.
B. What was interesting:
i'm interesting all of these article. this article give me many knowledge about Sociological theory.
In particular, I was impressed with feminism. Recently, there is a lot of controversy about feminism in our country. but i didn't study about it. And i'm surprised! because there are so many different fields in feminism.
Summarizing sociological theories has helped me a lot. And as a big issue, I thought I should study feminism in detail.
C. Discussion:
We have examined various sociological theories.
Of course all theories make sense,
What kind of theory do you think is best suited to our society?
