Introduction to Sociology/Stratification/Sujin LEE

1. Summary
Stratification refers to dividing people in society according to criteria. The criteria are usually divided into power, economic power, occupation, etc. In the United States, it is divided into three parts. The top tier of the population has a yield of hundreds of billions of dollars per year. One percent of the top tier in the United States has a quarter in national income. However, the middle class and lower classes have relatively much less income. Usually, these difference made by occupation of people. Also, the gap between the rich and the poor widened due to the recession. Inequality began with the beginning of settlements.

2.What I learned/interested in
I recalled Pareto principle what I learned in high school with the documents. Pareto principle states that 80% of the result is come from 20% of the causes. But, Pareto principle can apply to not only economy, many other phenomenon.

3. Discussion point
Economic hierarchies can not be solved by the power of the general public. So, can the nation solve this in capitalism?

  2. The nation will be able to resolve the economic stratification. If the nation supports subsidies to economically disadvantaged people and levies taxes on the upper echelons, the redistribution of wealth can be achieved to a certain extent.
