Introduction to Sociology/Politics/Dayoung Lee

1.Summary

Politics is the process of making socio-economic decisions and there are power, authority, and violence in it. Political power is a kind of power supported by a group which allows that group to permit the distribution of public resources. And there is authority in politics. Despite the different meanings of authority and power, the two terms are often exchanged interchangeably. However, authority is a term that claims legitimacy and is different from power. Lastly, there is violence. The government can exercise its right through violence to force citizens to do what the government deems appropriate.
The article also includes the information about six types of government, each containing descriptions of the monarchy, democracy, totalitarianism, oligarchy, communist state, and theocracy. In addition, there is a chapter about the political parties, which illustrate the United States and Sweden as examples.

2.What was interesting

In addition to the type of government that I learned in sociology class, I realized that there were other forms of government that exist. And actually I have learned about them, but there were some things I couldn't remember about them, so it was nice to understand and learn them again through this article.
I also worried about why the younger generation's turnout was lower than the turnout for the older generation. I think this problem is a matter of urgency for the future of the younger generation.

3.Discussion point

Why is younger people less likely to vote compared to older people? Poor turnout will upset the future of the younger generation. Politicians will set up a policy to attract older voters with higher voting rates, and the younger generation will have to narrow the gap. The welfare policy for the older generation will improves day by day, but welfare policy for the younger generation will naturally decrease. And the voices of young people wanting welfare for themselves will be ignored. So how can we increase the voting rate of younger generations? Let's think about how we can make the younger generation vote and be interested in politics.
