Introduction to Sociology/Sociological Theory/doeun lee

1.     Summary

Sociologists tried hard for develop a theory that explains social phenomenon. As it was, sociological theory could make great progress. We need to adopt to theory for correlation between concepts to understand the social world. Although there are several theories that stand out among numerous sociological theories, All social theory have same point in terms of giving a good explain of social phenomenon. For example, Durkheime’s researches, symbolic interactionism, etc..

2.     New/Interesting things I learned

The most impressive part is feminist theory. Feminist theory is very important knowledge to our that living in modern times. From here, most interesting part is 1970’s women had an important effect on sociology through developed insights and empirical findings.

And I think an integrationist approach is so interesting. The reason is that more useful in explaining social phenomenon than other theories. But this picture was a little difficult for me to understand. I want to study more this.

3.     Discussion point

Sociological theory is so difficult than I think. So, what is the best way to understand the sociology theory? Is it good to learn Sociological studies in diverse fields? Or is it a good to study deeply in a single field of sociology? I’m worried about this. Because I should prepare for the rest semester.

Comments

  1. I think to study briefly diverse field first and then study deeply a single field you like later is the best way.

  2. Reading this, I was also very interested in feminist theory. I want to study more deeply about it. Regarding your question, I personally think it is good to study a single field of interest. When you think you have a complete understanding of a single field, start studying another field.

  3. I prefer to study one field of discipline deeply. However, the sociological theory is all connected at the end. So I think we are eventually going to study in both ways. I also think that depends on your mind. If you’re not going to grad school, I don’t think that you’re gonna need the specific studying in one single sociological theory. But if you’re planning to do so, you’ll definitely need to study deeply in a single sociological theory. Because you have to write a thesis for your Master's degree or a doctorate.
