1. Summary

The wikibooks explain sociological theory’s definition and importance and introduce some famous sociological theories. Sociological Theory propose relationship among more than two different concepts and explain social phenomenon by the relationship. Why sociological theory is important? The reason is theory help to find relation among seemingly unrelated concepts. Sociological theories levels are various from micro-range to grand-range. This wikibooks introduce some famous sociological theories that Structural-Functionalism, Conflict Theory, Symbolic Interactonism and Role Theory, Social Constructionism, Feminist Theory, Integration Theory.

2. New, interesting, or unusual thing

I learned a lecture “social culture” when I am 2nd grade in highschool and I selected social culture in the social studies section of the exam for going to university. The lecture teaching to me sociology’s very basic concepts. I know shallowly the sociological theories in this text andStructural-Functionalism also. So I think Structural-Functionalism isn’t explain social change. But this text show Structural-Functionalism can explain social change with example about the industrialrevolution in the 19th century.

I wonder when a new theory is acknowledged as a theory, who acknowledge this theory, what is standard to be acknowledged as a theory. For example, this text includes radical feminist theory. But I don’t agree TERF(a stream of radical feminism.) is acceptable theory. TERF is abbreviation for Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminism. They deny non Cis-gender queer. The theory what hates social minorities is acknowledged as a theory?

  1. I really agree radical feminism is not acceptable theory. So I think theories that hate social minorities can not be accepted as theories.

  2. I also disagree with that stream of radical feminism. But regardless of my personal opinion, I think that theory is still a theory. I can’t deny the fact that TERF erases some kinds of genders. And of course, that’s wrong(again, my opinion). However just because the theory is not pc(politically correct) we can’t say that is not a theory. I think pc or un-pc is not a standard that can judge which can be acknowledged as a theory. So I think TERF is still a theory. By the way, we still can criticize. When we look a theory, If that theory contains wrong or incorrect things, we can just don’t pay attention to that. Sorry for not answering your fundamental questions. I’m curious which standards can make the theory to be acknowledged, too.

    1. Thank for giving your opinion. I accept a theory is still theory when it isn't PC. But sadly, I still wonder my first question: how theory is acknowledged as a theory. moreover, by your comment, I can think criticizing can be a solution.
